If you need temporary on-site or off-site storage, and you’ve rented a mobile storage unit, there are steps you can take to make packing, loading, and finding your items much more streamlined. Not only will proper packing and organization help you find what you need, when you need it, it will also protect your belongings from damage and stains.
The first step will be to properly pack the supplies you’ll be storing in your mobile storage.
Instead of scrambling trying to find boxes and packing supplies at the last minute, start off by gathering everything you need: sturdy boxes, packing paper for fragile items, heavy-duty tape, scissors, and markers. Try to pick boxes that are uniform in size—for example, your “small” boxes should all be the same size, as should your “medium” boxes. This makes stacking and organizing much easier.
To help your loading and unloading process, limit heavy items to smaller boxes so you don’t end up packing large boxes full of heavy items that are difficult to transport. When you wrap fragile items, use unprinted newsprint; printed ink can rub off and ruin certain items.
After items are packed in, secure each box securely with heavy-duty tape, and make sure you clearly label each box with the contents. For fragile items, you may want to use different color markers and write “Fragile” prominently on all sides of the box.
Once everything is packed and properly organized, it’s time to start loading your mobile storage unit.
Create a storage inventory list (or request one from BoxCart). As you load your storage unit, record which items go where and the general location they are placed—this will come in handy if you need to pull something out while in storage.
Put your heaviest items in the first and make sure you use protective covers on cloth items such as sofas and mattresses. Stack your tables, chairs, and lighter furniture items around the heavy items. Once your furniture items are in, you can start stacking in your boxes, taking care to stack the lighter boxes on heavier ones.
If you end up renting more than one mobile storage unit, we recommend designating one of the units for the items that you’ll need to access most frequently. Finally, our last recommendation for preparing and packing is to secure your unit with your own personal padlock.
